Overview

Camera Handling

In these workshops you will learn all about cameras, including the most important settings and how to hold and balance the camera for stable images.

Everything Audio

Sound is just as important, if not more so, than visuals. In this workshop, you will be guided through the most important types of microphones we use in filming and how to use them.

Storytelling

In this workshop, you will learn what makes a story unique, how to unpack an idea, how to approach research, and how to “see” your film before it is shot.

Lighting

Filmmaking is all about capturing light, and in this workshop, you will learn how to set up and position lights to get professional results, and how to do it safely.

Interviews

Interviews are an integral part of the documentary toolkit. In these workshops, we'll discuss how to get honest answers from your guests and how to frame and position your interview shots.

Capturing Images

How do you know which shots to shoot? What are establishing shots and cutaways? In these workshops, you'll learn all about this, as well as how to create shot lists, how to film with editing in mind, and more.

Editing is where your story comes together and is often the most challenging part. These workshops are divided into the principles of editing (the theory, so to speak), practical elements like finding stock footage and sound effects, and an introduction to DaVinci Resolve, a powerful, free editing program. Already familiar with a program? No problem! Most of the principles and practices are general, not tied to a single NLE.
